Single Family Homes in San Bernardino County and All California may be allowed to build to detached ADU's!

California AB 956 was signed into law on 9/29,2026. It applies to all single family homes in San Bernardino County as well as all California. This law is scheduled to go into effect on 1/1/2027. Eligible Single Family Homes may be allowed to build 2 Detached Accessory Dwelling Units.

Each ADU could potentially be allowed to be up to 800 Square Feet. Therefore you could have a Single Family Home and 2 Separate ADU’s. This really is a game changer that allows homeowners to generate additional rental income, accommodate multigenerational living and maximize land use.
